Pre-Surgical Prep Kits Reimagined
This newer adaptation of the pre-surgical take-home bag of yesteryear addresses the modern surgeon’s most pressing needs.
Responding to demand from eye care professionals,
Bruder Healthcare recently introduced a pre-surgical
prep kit containing the three core hygiene products
patients need in a single, self-contained kit.
The Bruder Sx Pre-Surgical Patient Prep Kit
Pro tips on how to help patients prepare their eyes for surgery from experts Dr. Jessica Ciralsky, MD (Weill Cornell), Dr. Alice Epitropoulos, MD (Ophthalmic Surgeons and Consultants of Ohio), and Dr. Mitch Jackson, MD (JacksonEye).
How do you encourage pre-surgical prep without too much added burden on the patient?
Dr. Ciralsky: Patients want an easy-to-follow regimen.
Dr. Epitropoulos: Patients are also overwhelmed when they go to the pharmacy for multiple care products, which is why it’s so nice to have everything all in one kit.
Dr. Jackson: Cost is another potential burden. Some patients can’t afford in-office dry eye treatments before surgery. This prep kit addresses this very real need to offer these patients something to help get them ready for surgery.
From a clinical perspective, what benefits matter most to you in the surgical setting?
Dr. Epitropoulos: Plenty of research now shows that if you treat the ocular surface preoperatively and reduce ocular surface disease, you will improve the accuracy of your IOL power calculations, which helps optimize your outcomes.
Dr. Ciralsky: A key value of these products that resonates with me and my patients is that the hygiene kit, and the spray in particular, is an important step toward the effort to reduce risk of intra-operative infection.
Dr. Jackson: The benefits extend beyond surgery as well. When the patient takes care of the ocular surface before surgery, they’re likely to be more comfortable in the post-operative period.
The Bruder Sx Pre-surgical Patient Prep Kit isn’t only useful for cataract cases. It can also be used before all kinds of corneal surgeries, including LASIK, PRK, Smile, ICL, corneal transplants, and more.

Which patient groups can benefit most from the kit?
Dr. Ciralsky: Many patients have ocular surface disease and treatment can be difficult due to poor patient compliance. In the setting of surgery, patients tend to be more compliant to ensure they have the best outcome. This makes it easier to explain the value of these products, and having a
pre-packaged kit helps with patient compliance.
Dr. Epitropoulos: Prep is a must for any patient with signs and symptoms of ocular surface disease. Even if patients are asymptomatic, they may become symptomatic and be disappointed postoperatively. At the end of the day, every patient can benefit from our best efforts to reduce the risk of endophthalmitis.
Dr. Jackson: I’d like to close by adding that the pre-surgical kit isn’t only useful for cataract cases. It can also be used before all kinds of corneal surgeries, including LASIK, PRK, Smile, ICL, corneal transplants, and more.
